Product Review: Tofurky Vegan Cheese Pizza

December 15, 2010 by epicureanvegan

For the Sixth Grader, finding a tasty vegan pizza is a must. Pizza parties are a thing of the past for him, so I think it’s important for him to have this treat every now and again.

Tofurky claims that this is the “1st Non-Dairy Cheese That Really Melts”. Well, they use Daiya cheese, just like Amy’s Mac and Cheeze so that is promising!  The 12-oz frozen pizza will cost you $6.79 at Vitamin Cottage Grocers, but $8.99 at Whole Foods (gee . . .big surprise). I certainly don’t think that’s right to pay that much for a frozen pizza. Unfortunately, I think that’s one of the reasons why vegan food gets a bad rap as being more expensive. But I think the more people eat vegan, the cheaper the products will become.  (The Sixth Grader, of course has no problem with the price . . . 😉 )

You bake it at 420 for 11-12 minutes (10 was perfect). It was quite good! They don’t skimp on the cheese and like they claim, it melts beautifully. Very impressive.

A third of the pizza contains 240 calories, 2 grams of saturated fat, NO CHOLESTEROL, and less sodium than regular cheese pizza.

Overall, this is a great choice for a vegan pizza, if you don’t mind the price tag.

Thanks for the review, I stare at those in the freezer at WF but always walk away. Not a big fan of frozen pizza but my boy loves and in a pinch they’re a quick dinner for him.

This looks great. These have popped up in my grocery lately and while they are a bit expensive, I’ve been tempted to buy them. Something about cheese pizza that weakens my knees; I’ve been vegan for years and years, but I still dream about that slice that is covered in grease and fresh from the pizza place.
Next time I have a tofurky coupon I’ll give it a try!
    Thanks!

It looks good. Taste better than zpizza or the same? It’s nice that it’s frozen but yeah that price tag. Haven’t seen it here yet but might give it a go when I do!

I think it tastes pretty darn good–I guess I should have been more detailed in my review! It tastes very close to real pizza–but of course, I haven’t had “real” pizza in a very long time. Daiya cheese is extremely good and melts great, so this could be the closest to “pizza” you may get. 🙂 It’s worth a try!

Great! Can’t wait to try it out. Rare but special treat probably at that price. Like theveggie, I wouldn’t be able to tell by looking at it that it was vegan either. Melts down like some store-brand dairy pizzas.

It looks great. It’s nice to see an honest (i.e. not the box) picture of what it looks like all cooked. I have to say, I don’t think I’d be able to tell it was vegan just from the looks of it. Frozen pizza is a nice comfort food to have around, but now that the cooking thing is getting a little easier (w. practice) I’m finding it just as good to keep bases in my freezer. So, for instance I make doughs and freeze them. When I need to make something I need to have a good day of advance notice though, so probably can’t displace the frozen pizza. But I think everything tastes better homemade =)

The Epicurean Vegan is devoted to those wanting to eat healthy, save animals, and reduce their carbon footprint. My decision to go vegan started out as a quest to get healthier, but the more I learned about veganism, the more I realized how damaging the meat and dairy industries are to the environment and, of course, the animals. And it is for these reasons, that I would never go back to eating or wearing animal products. Ever.
